I added some authors to the description of this Tribe, so their readers will be more likely to find us.
I'm happy to add your favorites, too. :)

Re: Author Collection
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 11:54 AMVery interesting list of authors. What is feminism? Did you find "The Sparrow" to be feminist? Has Maria Doria Russell written anything else? Do you consider most books by women to be feminist, by definition? -

Wed, June 7, 2006 - 7:18 AMDCreader,
"What is feminism?" is *huge* in scope. As a system of ideas, Feminism is stil evolving and diversifying. There are whole academic departments at universities that embody that question.
Some quickie answers:
A) Feminism is the idea that women are people.
B) Feminism is anti-sexism.
C) Feminism is the study of unequal power relationships of social groups under patriarchy.
Fortunately, Wikipedia's article on feminism is excellent:

Re: Author Collection
Tue, June 6, 2006 - 12:41 PMI'd add James Tiptree, Jr. Not only was she ("real" name: Alice B. Sheldon) a truly remarkable writer of science fiction and speculative fiction, but the award named after her is given specifically to: "an annual literary prize for science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender." www.tiptree.org/
